What Is a Herniated Disc?

The upper (cervical) back contains seven bones. The middle region (thoracic) contains twelve bones. The lower (lumbar) back has five bones. These bones are called vertebrae. As the human body moves, twists, and extends through daily or strenuous activities, it undergoes strain. The bones' stress and impact are absorbed in the tissue between each of the vertebral bones, called discs. The discs make up of two layers. A more rigid outer lining protects a soft inner cushion. When the inner layer slips or seeps through the outer layer, that is a herniated disc.

Common Symptoms of a Herniated Disc

Usually, pain is associated with a herniated disc. This can be mild to severe, depending on the rupture's severity. Numbness and tingling will accompany the disc injury. If the disc is ruptured in the upper back, numbness and tingling may be felt in the neck, shoulders, arms, or hands. If the rupture has occurred in the lower back, numbness and tingling may extend to the buttocks, legs, and feet. Herniated disc symptoms also include feeling more clumsy than usual, with people reporting that they are tripping or dropping items more frequently.

What Increases the Risk of Herniated Disc?

Obesity is a common cause of this injury. Also, lack of exercise and movement can put you at a higher risk of a herniated disc. It is also essential to use proper form when lifting to avoid herniated discs.
